NEW REALEASES

Abstinence Teacher
by Tom Perrotta
When Your Are Engulfed in Flames
by David Sedaris
  Women of the Court
by Verda Foster
Not just a satire exploring the insidious influence on society of the religious right, but also a ruthlessly funny snapshot of a group of people just like you and me, achingly normal, trying to be happy, trying in different ways to wring a sense of fulfilment and meaningfulness out of their less than fairy-tale lives. It has perhaps taken turning 50 to bring David Sedaris to the onset of maturity – but on the evidence of this collection at least, it's done nothing to stop him being effortlessly funny. He tallies up the last 25 years, the prime of his life, and isn't impressed: "How had 9,125 relatively uneventful days passed so quickly," he writes, "and how can I keep it from happening again?"

Inside the WNBL

This is a comprehensive look at just how the league was formed, and how its female players have taken it to the top. From the boardroom, to the men's professional game, to the movers and shakers who made the league possible, this is not just the history of the league but also of the key players that made it happen.

Sex Variant Woman: A Life of Jeannette Howard Foster
by Joanne Passet

Passet, a professor of history captures both the personal and professional obstacles faced by Jeanette Howard Foster, the foremother of lesbian literature. Passet begins with Foster’s childhood and adolescence, a cold and confusing time with parents enthralled by their own business failures, living distantly from each other and their daughter. Tumultuous undergrad years take her through multiple colleges and her first few broken hearts. As a series of often-intellectual women traipse in and out of her life, a very driven Foster succeeds in obtaining her PhD and eventually works for famed sexual scientist Alfred Kinsey as the institute’s first librarian—all before finally completing her own highly controversial book, Sex Variant Women in Literature. Somewhat ironically, Foster’s personal life (especially her love life) take precedence over her accomplishments in nearly every chapter; still, Passet does justice to Foster’s important place in both literary and lesbian culture.

Wisdom of Whores
By Elizabeth Pisani

Despite billions of dollars in funding, international HIV-prevention efforts sometimes achieve only modest results, a reality the author sums up as the triumph of politics and ideology over sound science. Combining a background in journalism with experience as an epidemiologist (who has worked with, among other organizations, UNAIDS, the World Bank, and the health ministries of several Asian governments), Pisani here presents a blunt, cynical, and even funny insider’s view of global HIV-prevention efforts. When she isn’t telling colorful stories, she’s skewering everyone who allows ideology to overrule science, e.g., conservatives who oppose needle exchanges and the distribution of condoms despite evidence that they reduce the spread of HIV significantly; well-meaning international development professionals who argue that HIV is spread by poverty and gender inequality rather than by sex and IV drug use; and, especially, politicians who allow the epidemic to grow rather than make unpopular—but evidence-based—decisions. Though she writes in a lively journalistic style, Pisani crafts cogent arguments and supports them with detailed footnotes and an extensive bibliography. with only a core group of friends to turn to for reassurance.

Once Upon a Time in England
by Helen Walsh
  Miami Manhunt
by Johnny Diaz
  The Flaneur
by Edmund White
  Hollywood Babylon, It's Back
by Darwin Porter
Don't be deceived by the title – this haunting story is no fairytale. Walsh takes us straight to the badlands of Orford, north England, in 1975, where mixed-race couple Robbie and Susheela Fitzgerald live with poverty and prejudice, in an all-white council estate patrolled by a mob of racist skinheads. It tackles ugly subjects – racism, rape, drugs, homophobia and violence – but no details seem gratuitous.   Johnny Diaz brought readers a glimpse at the gay Cuban-American scene with last year’s fun-filled romp Boston Boys’ Club. Now Diaz turns up the heat, shifting the focus down south to Florida for a sexy, summery follow-up titled Miami Manhunt. Boston Boys’ Club was a perfect summer beach read; Miami Manhunt offers passages and choices that will keep the reader thinking back to the book well into the autumn.   If a place is best known by its particulars, then Edmund White is an expert on Paris. Fortunately, he's generous with his secrets: he reveals a Paris not found in any other guide in this first book in the Writer and the City series. The variety of Paris, White remarks, is matched by the voraciousness and passion of its people. With his own remarkable flair, he reveals a thriving and alluring city where tourists rarely tread.   Hollywood may get more than it bargained for with Hollywood Babylon's compendium of stories, rumors and myths. Virtually every page features one kind of train wreck or another, usually accompanied by spectacularly lurid photographs. The new book seems to carry on the spirit of Anger's original by giving the film industry the ultimate bitch-slap with stories that explore whether Lucille Ball was a hooker and alleging that Ava Gardner was addicted to visiting bordellos.
The book includes over 1000 photos that don't stint on both full male and female nudity - so, there's something for everyone in the family!
